Book Excerpt 3

Another short excerpt from my longer work for tonight, a new short story should be live for tomorrow.  I'm going to dinner with some friends tonight, so hopefully that won't impact my production schedule.

Most of the cars we passed, luckily were lower than ours, so I was saved from being too exposed.  I did notice that Hayley drove precariously close to some big rigs, and if they had been looking, they would have seen my bare leg for certain.  Of course, it was dark, and so even if they had seen something, it was reasonable to assume it to be something else.

As we pulled into the parking lot, I scanned the surrounding area for signs of life.   Sure enough, there was a pretty clear path of darkness that lead to her staircase, which lead directly to her front door.  Additionally, the pool was almost deserted and so we had this patch of the commons area to ourselves, as long as the people in the pool didn’t look up too much.

Hayley parked in her spot and bounded out of the car giddy with excitement.  I remember thinking that she looked like a little girl excited about her new puppy, and then quickly came to the realization that I was the puppy.  She came around to the passenger door and opened it up, a slight breeze of warm June air came through.

Book Excerpt 2

More teasing for my readers tonight, as I post another excerpt from  my work in progress.  The still untitled novel is now over 12,000 words, and I'm really happy with the progress I'm making.  However, tomorrow, I'll post a brand new, standalone story, since my short fiction is what keeps my longer fiction from getting stale.  The excerpts I am posting are kind of out of order (and only a small snippet) so trying to piece together everything won't work out too well for you.

And now for the excerpt:

The birthday dare was something that she had invented in college, and it was a tradition between the two of us.  Something embarrassing, crazy, and out of character was the name of the game, and if anyone ever backed out, they were called chicken for it.  One year, she told me that I was to greet everyone at the door with the number of men I've slept with.  For each of her birthdays, before this last one of course, I had her wear a tighter and more ridiculous outfit.

“It's not my birthday!”  I mock-protested.  My real birthday was the day before, and my family came over with cake and relatives, and questions of when I would get married.  “Oh,” she said, “so I should just get used to calling you chicken right now?”

I let out a sigh, “Oh, all right!  What are you going to have me do this year?”

Book Excerpt 1

Tonight, I am working on a chapter of my full-length novel, so unfortunately, no story for tonight.  My personal goal for this blog is to post something daily, but if I'm working on a chapter in my novel, then I'll just post an excerpt from the novel in progress (to tease you all with what is to come!)

Without further ado, an excerpt from my untitled book , that already has over eight thousand words to it:

"Well, if you choose the last option, you need to wait for me without the robe."  She raised her eyebrows a bit, she was testing the waters to see what she could get away with.  "It's dark, you'll be covered, as long as you don't turn on the inside light."  She started fiddling with her phone, predicting my inevitable decision.

"Ok, I can do that," I agreed.  And with that a signal was sent into outer space, and the car was unlocked.  I opted to wait in the backseat of her SUV in the middle seat, thinking I could sit very still and perhaps pass as inanimate to anyone that happened to walk by and peer in.  Hayley cleared her throat, and I realized that she was waiting for me to release the robe.  I fidgeted a little and before I knew it, the silky fabric was slipping through my fingers and out the open door.

The waiting was really nothing.  The car wasn't exactly warm, but I still felt protected.  I watched Hayley bound towards my door, letting my robe hang loose around her neck, like a scarf.  It was her trophy, and she looked as if she was relishing each moment.  I'm sure she was having fun, but just waiting for her was no big deal for me.  After the first couple of minutes, I realized that nobody was around, and I let out a little sigh.

I was a little disappointed by the loneliness, and then I started imagining the night that awaited me.  I pictured myself in her bed, throwing off the sandals and diving in.  It occured to me that while Hayley and I had been to the same gym a thousand times, this would be the first time when I would not only be allowed, but expected, to ogle.  That made me giddy with excitement, and I realized as Hayley returned that I was in full swoon.

As Hayley returned to the car and got into the driver's seat, I sensed something was a bit wrong.  She started the engine, and put the car in gear, and I suddenly realized what she had not brought back.

"Umm, Hayley, you forgot my..."

"I didn't forget, the robe is on your couch, safe and sound," she said with a raised eyebrow.
